9 SONGS (2004)
Directed by: Micheal Winterbottom
Matt, a young glaciologist, soars across the vast, silent, icebound immensities of the South Pole as he recalls his love affair with Lisa. They meet at a mobbed rock concert in a vast music hall—London’s Brixton Academy. They are in bed at night’s end. Together, over a period of several months, they pursue a mutual sexual passion whose inevitable stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs. (source)

In just 10 days, Dave Sitek will drop his debut solo record as Maximum Balloon, but until then, the TV on the Radio member and Yeah Yeah Yeahs producer is previewing 3 tunes from the self-titled LP on MySpace. Alongside Theophilus London-featuring cut “Groove Me” and “Tiger” (with Aku) is the catchy, disco-ready jam “Communion,” in which Karen O requests, “Gimme that beat / Show your love,” via Studio 54-destined time machine.
“Communion” is the best song off Maximum Balloon I’ve heard so far, and added proof that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman’s brilliant songwriting chops are underrated, at times, in favor of citing her enthralling stage persona. Give it a spin with the other two jams here or below.
